Gummies, chewables, sachets and stick packs are attractive supplement formats because they are convenient, easy to consume and suitable for daily-use products. However, these formats also expose one of the biggest weaknesses of many active ingredients: taste.
A capsule can hide bitterness. A gummy, chewable or sachet cannot. Bitter botanicals, metallic minerals, pungent extracts and earthy actives can quickly make a finished product difficult to accept, even when the ingredient itself has strong commercial value.
Many formulation teams first try to solve taste problems by adding more flavour, sweetener or acidulant. This can help in mild cases, but it often does not solve the core problem when the active itself is strongly bitter, metallic, pungent or lingering.
