Mineral Chelates in Sensitive Formulations: Taste, Staining, Caking and Verification Risks

Why mineral chelates still need formulation support

Mineral chelates are widely used in supplement formulations because they offer strong positioning compared with many conventional mineral salts. Iron bisglycinate, zinc bisglycinate and magnesium bisglycinate are commonly used in women's wellness, immune wellness, sleep and relaxation, paediatric nutrition, sports recovery and multinutrient products.

However, a chelated mineral is not automatically easy to formulate.

Taste and sensory challenges

In gummies, chewables, sachets, stick packs and flavoured powders, mineral chelates can still create taste challenges.

Iron bisglycinate can create metallic taste. Zinc bisglycinate can bring metallic or astringent notes. Magnesium bisglycinate may become bitter or mineral-like at higher inclusion levels.

These sensory issues can delay formulation approval and increase the number of flavour trials needed before launch.
